The Dome Awakens: 3rd Annual Star Wars Celebration

Star Wars DayCelebrate all things Star Wars at the Central Library @ Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common for the third annual Star Wars library event. Featured activities include a Star Wars-themed astronomy talk by local astrophysicists and chemistry professors, a costume contest, crafts, Jedi story times, Rey's Scavenger Hunt and costumed characters from the awesome 501st Legion and Rebel Legion. This event is open to all ages and all levels of Star Wars fandom.

Get Ready for the First Folio with Fiction Inspired by the Bard

First FolioHave you reserved your tickets for the June exhibition of First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare at the Central Library? Tickets are free, and reservations are highly recommended. Reserve yours here. In anticipation of the exhibition, librarians have compiled a reading list of fiction inspired by the Bard. Peruse the list for a Shakespeare-themed title and get ready to see the Folio in person this summer. Introduce your children to Shakespeare with a series of "Have Fun with Hamlet" family events at a variety of branch libaries this month.

Learn a New Skill at the Library's Inaugural How-To Festival

How-To FestivalVisit one of four public libraries on May 14 and learn new skills during the Library's How-To Festival. Taking place at the Rancho Peñasquitos, Otay Mesa-Nestor, Pacific Beach/Taylor, and Central libraries, the How-To festival offers short 20 to 40 minute classes on a wide variety of topics including: How to Be a Smart Voter, How to Brew Beer at Home, How to Meditate, and How to Appreciate the Music of Prince, among many others.

Save the Date for the "Party of the Century"

Celebration Under the DomeSave the date for the 3rd annual Celebration Under the Dome on Friday, October 7. Last year’s event raised more than $500,000 to support materials, programs and technology at all 36 public libraries. Attendees raved about the event with one guest commenting it was “the party of the decade, if not the century.” This year’s Celebration promises to be even better. Celebrate Mother's Day With Yoga and Brunch at the Library Shop

The event will feature an hour-long yoga session from 10:30 to 11:30 am in the garden courtyard, followed by a light brunch and mimosa tasters. Bike Rodeo Helps Teens and Children Learn Bike Safety Skills

National Bike MonthIn honor of National Bike Month, the Pacific Beach/Taylor Branch Library will host a Bike Rodeo for teens and children. Skills stations will give participants the opportunity to practice a variety of bike handling skills and procedures for operating a bike legally and safely. The Pacific Beach/Taylor branch will also host a Bike to Work Day Pitstop on Friday, May 20 (6 am - 6 pm). Stop by the Library on your bike commute to or from work and pick up a free Bike to Work Day t-shirt and snacks, donated by SANDAG (while supplies last).

Volunteer for READ/San Diego and Help Adults Learn to Read

READ/San Diego Adult LiteracyAt any given time, there are up to 150 people on a waiting list to take advantage of READ/San Diego, a free adult literacy program offered by the Library. The program is currently seeking volunteer literacy tutors. Helping someone learn to read gives them the gift of knowledge and the power to change their entire world. Crime Scene Science - A Bio Lab Workshop

Crime Scene ScienceHow can scientists determine the identity of a criminal from a tiny piece of evidence? In this hands-on workshop you will learn powerful molecular techniques for solving crimes with DNA analysis, fingerprint analysis, chromatography, and other scientific methods. This program is a collaboration between The Lab, AWIS, and the La Jolla Library BioLab. For ages 12 - 18, as well as adults. Registration is required and is limited to 30 participants.

Summer Reading Book Drive Seeks New and Used Children's Books

Summer Reading Book DriveIn honor of Reading Awareness Month, City Councilmember Lorie Zapf recently kicked off a Summer Reading book drive for new and gently used children's books. The book drive will run through May 31 and is a partnership between the City, San Diego Public Library, Words Alive, and United Way. Collection bins are located in the City Administration building, the Central Library, and over 20 different branch libraries. All donated books will be distributed during the Library's Summer Reading Program, which will begin in June.
