Community Performance: Akayaa Atule and Bolga Zohdoomah

May 20  /  6 pm  /  City Heights Performance Annex/Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park
Drenched in the sun-bright rhythms of Africa, singer and drummer Akayaa Atule brings her own flavor of Ghanaian/Afrobeat highlife music to City Heights. Performing with Bolga Zohdoomah, they mix traditional African music with Western instruments and melodies.

Ballet in the Park

Bring chairs or a blanket and enjoy a free performance on the Cass Street Plaza by City Ballet II, the junior company of the critically acclaimed City Ballet of San Diego. Learn more.

Kamishibai Storytime: Japanese Street Theater & Storytelling

Before TV and comic books existed in Japan, there was Kamishibai, or paper theater. With a wooden box, illustrations and a great narrator, this storytime is a treat for the kids. Learn more.

Endurance Swimmer and Author Lynne Cox

American long-distance open-water swimmer, motivational speaker, and author Lynne Cox will discuss her latest book, Tales of Al. Register.

Community Performance: Cypher St8

May 27  /  6 pm  /  City Heights Performance Annex/Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park
Mr. Dyno Rock brings his high-energy breakin’ crew to City Heights. Their performance will include a cypher – a freestyle dance jam where people take turns showing off their moves in the middle of a circle. From the street to your backyard!

On View - Local Arts: Origami Works by Joseph Hwang

Origami with Joseph Hwang
In this exhibit, on view at the La Jolla/Riford library from May 1 to 27, paperfolding artist Joseph Hwang presents two original series of animal origami designs and modular balls. Figurative models are folded from single uncut squares, and modulars from mutiple uncut squares without glue. In every work, the rules are the same: start with a square and no cutting. Learn more.
