This fall, the Library is hosting a variety of programs reflecting on Japanese American experiences during and post-World War II, exploring themes of social justice, activism, and the power of the written word. (Read about it in the news!) Don't miss this compelling in-person interview on October 2 with Carlsbad resident Jack Kubota, as he shares his internment story with local historian Linda Canada.

The Library Shop's Fifth Annual Matchbook Story Contest Starts October 1

Library Shop Matchbook Story ContestSan Diego's shortest—and quirkiest—short story contest is back and this time it's free to enter! Stories must be 50 words or less—short enough to fit inside the cover of a matchbook. The winner will receive a $50 gift card to the Library Shop, 50 copies of the printed matchbook, publication in this very newsletter, and exhibition of your Matchbook Story in the Hervey Family Rare Book Room. So get writing, you have until November 15 to enter.

Celebrate Halloween with the Library

Halloween at the LibraryWhether you enjoy scary stories, haunted history, or not-so-spooky fun, the Library has something for you this Halloween. On October 20, attend a virtual lecture at the Library to learn about Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. On October 24, join Philippine Fright author Marivi Soliven and local playwright Thelma Virata de Castro as they read scary stories and discuss cultural folklore. And on October 30, put on your favorite costume and visit the Mission Valley Library for a Halloween STEAM party with crafts, experiments, and a scavenger hunt.

Shaking the Tree Memoir EventJoin the Library Shop on October 23 for an outdoor event to celebrate the launch of the San Diego Memoir Writers Association's third volume of compelling true stories drawn from their annual Memoir Showcase contest. This year's winning selections address the theme of, "I Didn't See That One Coming." While these stories were written before the pandemic, they offer insight and reflections on how unseen events shape our lives. Registration is highly recommended.


Calling All Authors! 56th Local Author Showcase

Local Author ShowcaseDid you have a book or ebook published in 2021? If the answer is yes, and if you reside in San Diego County, you are invited to participate in the upcoming 56th Annual Local Author Showcase. As the crowning event of the Library's Local Author Program, the showcase offers our published authors an opportunity to present their work to a large audience of readers, publishers, and fellow bibliophiles and residents. Be sure to submit your book by the November 30 deadline.
