A Message from the Library Director Misty Jones

Misty Jones justify right

The San Diego Public Library is following California and San Diego County Public Health guidance and keeping buildings closed until further notice to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

And while we are not physically open, Library staff continue to provide helpful online resources (see highlights below). I know some of you are worried about past due materials. Please don’t worry. All library materials with due dates since March 13 have been extended and currently are due on May 22. Drop off boxes are closed. So, please hold onto your materials and return them once it is safe for our Libraries to reopen. Visit this FAQ section for more details.

Our primary concern is the health of our community. Please follow the guidance of our Mayor and health leaders by staying home, limiting physical contact, and keeping at least six feet of separation if you must leave your home (find more guidance HERE).

We know this creates challenges. I’m inspired by our patrons who are learning, and instructing their children, in new ways. There are many educational online resources that can help. Listed below are some added resources created by our staff. Visit the eLibrary to browse the entire portfolio of resources. Thank you to the San Diego Public Library Foundation for their recent $20,000 donation to expand these resources and to the Friends of the Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Library for supporting e-resources.

I’m extremely proud of our Library staff for stepping up. As always, they are creative and have adapted to find new ways to serve the community. Visit us on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram to see some of that work. And, in a very exciting development, our Public Technology Library team is working with community partners to use Library 3D printers to provide critically-needed personal protective equipment for healthcare workers (read more below). Thank you again to the Library Foundation for facilitating these partnerships and funding equipment.

Other Library staff are filling nontraditional roles during this crisis. Currently I am supporting the temporary regional homeless shelter at the Convention Center. I am grateful for the amazing direction provided by the Library leadership team while I fill this role. Thank you all.

I’m glad the Library is serving the public remotely during this crisis but am looking forward to returning to full service as soon as we can. If you have any questions, please email Library staff

Please stay safe and be well.

Library 3D Printers Providing Needed Protective Equipment

Hoang and PPEMayor Faulconer announced a partnership among the City, Library, Library Foundation, Francis Parker School, Scripps Health and Kaiser Permanente to use Library 3D printers to provide critically-needed faceshields for area healthcare workers. With donor support, the Library Foundation has funded additional printers and materials that help Library staff provide 300 masks a week free of cost to hospitals. "A lot of San Diegans have come together to make this a reality," the Mayor said. "This partnership is going to save lives, truly." Watch more on this story HERE.
